The Tour Around Terceira Island is a guided journey that allows you to explore the most iconic corners of this Azorean island, offering a complete experience of discovery and immersion in local culture, nature, and history.
This detailed tour includes visits to stunning viewpoints, protected natural areas, and volcanic pools with crystal-clear waters, always accompanied by stories and curiosities about each location.
Here are just a few examples of places you will visit:
Monte Brasil: A true open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This volcanic peninsula dominates the city’s landscape. As you ascend to the top along a winding path between pine trees and cryptomerias, you’ll find several viewpoints offering different perspectives of the city and the surrounding sea. At the summit of Monte Brasil stands the Fortaleza de São João Baptista, an imposing 16th-century military fortification that played a significant role in defending against corsair and pirate attacks.
Heading west across the island, you will reach the majestic Serra de Santa Bárbara, the highest point on Terceira, rising to 1,021 meters. This area is characterized by rugged nature, where you can observe the endemic vegetation of the Azores in its nearly pure state. The mountain is a protected area due to its rich biodiversity, serving as a refuge for various native bird and plant species.
Lagoa das Patas: This tranquil spot is situated in a valley surrounded by dense cryptomeria forests, where the predominant sound is the song of the birds. The lagoon, with its calm and mirrored waters, is the ideal place for a brief pause amidst the serenity of nature.
Miradouro da Serra do Cume: One of the island’s most iconic locations. This viewpoint offers an impressive view over the plain that extends to the sea, known as the “Manta de Retalhos” due to the way the farmland is divided by volcanic stone walls.
Porto Martins: A small parish known for its bathing areas. Here, the natural pools are a bit smaller and more sheltered, providing a quieter, family-friendly environment.
Os Biscoitos: Famous for its natural pools formed by volcanic rock. These pools are among the most popular summer spots on Terceira, where the crystal-clear Atlantic waters invite relaxing swims. The contrast between the black rock and the turquoise waters is truly fascinating, creating an impressive natural landscape. In addition to the pools, Os Biscoitos is also known for its production of verdelho wine, one of the island’s oldest grape varieties. The volcanic soil in this region is ideal for viticulture, and you can visit traditional vineyards.
Exploring Terceira Island is more than just a trip; it’s an opportunity to connect with nature and feel the energy of each landscape, discovering that often the greatest treasures lie in the simplest details.
